Privacy & your information
Last updated 16 August 2026 · SLATE is run from Victoria, Australia
The short version
SLATE is a private film pre-production tool. Your name and email are used to run your
account and nothing else. Nothing is sold, nothing is shared outside the workspace, and there
are no ads or tracking companies involved. Ever.
Who we are
SLATE is run privately from Victoria, Australia, and is used by people we invite
(you need a join code and an admin’s approval to get in). We handle personal information in
line with the Australian Privacy Principles in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).
What we collect, and why
- Your account — a username, and (only if you choose to add them) an email address,
display name and profile picture. The email is used for password resets, approval messages and
sign-up alerts — that’s it. Your password is stored scrambled (hashed); nobody can read
it, including us.
- Your work — the projects, scripts, schedules and boards you make. That’s the
whole point of the app. Edit history is kept so work can be recovered, and it records who made
each change and when.
- Sign-in cookies — one that keeps you signed in during a visit, and one that
remembers you on that browser for 30 days. Signing out removes both. Your light/dark choice is
saved on your own device.
- Activity — who’s online and recent saves, shown to people in the workspace on
the Home page.
That’s the lot. There are no analytics trackers, no ad networks, and we never sell or
trade anyone’s information.
Who can see what
- People in a project with you can see your name, username, picture and activity.
- Workspace admins can see everyone’s account details (including email addresses) so
they can approve sign-ups and help with accounts.
- Nobody outside the workspace sees anything.
Where it lives
Everything is stored in a database on our own server, run by us — not spread across
third-party platforms. The one outside service involved is our email provider (smtp2go), which
passes on the emails SLATE sends — approval notes, password resets and the like — the same
way any email service does.
Your choices
- See or change your name, email and picture any time from the ME button.
- Want your account or work corrected or deleted? Ask a workspace admin — for this
workspace that’s Michael or Hayden — and it’ll be done.
- Using SLATE for a class? When the class wraps up, your admin can remove your account
and everything attached to it.
Questions or complaints
Talk to a workspace admin first — they can fix most things on the spot. If you’re not
happy with how something was handled, you can contact the Office of the Australian Information
Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.
If this statement changes, we’ll say so in What’s new on the Home page.
